I figured out I did not complete the story of my desire to be a part of the body of benchers, my apologies.
QUICK RECAP
I wanted to belong to an association-the body of benchers primarily because it was male dominated and the only way to get this position was either to attain the rank of Senior Advocate of the bar or become the head of any chambers in the faculty of law
The rank of Senior Advocate of the bar did come with a huge prestige and a seat where I wanted to be; the Body of Benchers. It is an unparalled mark of soundness in legal ideals and activism earning one so much pride and regard in the faculty. A very limited group with the real the laws; a group that just did not seem like one I could be a part of. My goal to be a part of the body of benchers started dwindling as well until I had the ambition to run for the head of my chamber.
Realization did not hit me until later on, that the position of the head of chambers offered a seat at the Body of Benchers, I was driven and motivated better. I nursed this ambition in my second year at school to run in my fourth year.
During my second year, a female got appointed as a Senior Advocate of the Union, the second to ever achieve that feat in ten years if I am correct. I was elated, I felt like I had achieved. I ended up losing in the election for the head of chambers but I was represented, through another person, one of my aspirations was fulfilled.
Representation does truly sound like a good thing, but to what extent?. The need for representation or dare I say inclusivity is a constant burdensome issue. As controversial as this might sound, if one out of ten couples in America is gay, it does actually make sense to have at least one gay couple in the movie. However what is not ideal, is to without reason or any neccesary addition to the film, make gayism the sub plot of the film.
The same goes for racial representation, while diversity of characters is very important, why am I seeing a romance movie having a racial discrimination undertone, in which it becomes a conflict and gets its own resolution; a complete unnecessary addition to the film.
More blood is drawn when it comes to making a film out of an original series or book, while The little mermaid did upset most people, the most upsetting to me was Winx Club, an animation of different beautiful ladies with a great sense of style who also had super powers. They had different beauty standards when it came to hair and skin tones but they were all slim and tall.
Not the best of their pictures but should suffice…
Top movie production comapny, Netflix, decided to turn this into a movie, there was a black girl who dressed like she came to Europe for the first time, a fat girl who was also short with a poor sense of style, while the other three were mid at best. The admiration for the animation was as a result of how glamorous this girls looked and acted, all of this was destroyed in the name of representation and wondered why it was not received warmly.
Here you go, netflix chosen characters…
Alteration of original acts to include other classes or group of people in my opinion seems like a pity party. The people supposedly represented will obviously not be glad that they were an afterthought.
The entire act reeks of the production team wanting to have their film more accepted and not that they actually did consider representing such people but then again is that not what capitalism truly is? Making profit is the only purpose of a capitalist or most business men. Bad publicity is still pubicity they say, people decide to watch in order to criticize, and producers get paid.
Then what is the essence of this entire write-up?
In as much as representation turned out to be used as an agenda like every other struggle, it does not negate the fact that it is neccesary. However, in a situation like the one can we are constantly facing- subtle and deliberate imposition disguised as representation, the one last thing you are not being robbed of is your opinion, you will always be entitled to that. Here are mine, let me hear yours.
This is well written Eeman. Its good to get your insight.
